The first thing you will need to do before cleaning is to figure out what kind of floor you have. There are surface sealed floors that do not require much maintenance, and if your floor is new, you probably have one of these already. You probably have a penetrating seal treated floor if you have older floor installed. You will need to apply more oils and wax to maintain this type of floor.
For cleaning hardwood floors, in the case of a surface sealed floor, you merely need to mop using a product recommended by your flooring manufacturer. Products that do not contain oil, like Oil Soap, are safe to be used. Use some soap and a damp mop on this type of floor and you will be safe. Since wood floors can be damaged with sitting water, you have to dry the surface completely when you finish your task.
You can’t mop with water based products if you have penetrating seal treated floor installed. Use a vacuum cleaner to clean your floors instead. You will have deep cleaned floors if you remove the old wax coating and apply new one every once in a while. Usually, you will need to do this two times a year, but you can do it more often.
Simply follow the directions from manufacturer and make sure you are using stripper. Allow the hardwood floor to dry and try to ensure proper ventilation. Check what kind of wax can be used on your type of floor, the manufacturer should tell you this. Follow directions and apply one or two coats, or as many as desired.
Using home scrubber is the last and most important step. It’s necesasry to use process like this so you can achieve beautiful shine and that the wax can properly sink in the floor. Most people opt to rent or buy a hardwood floor buffer machine, since it makes the job much easier. It’s good to know that a new wood floor buffer will simply pay for itself after you use it 3 to 4 times in your home.
